Flight Officer Bud Miller

Flight Officer Bud Miller (USAAF No. T-1909??) was an NCO pilot of the USAAF, flying attachment with the RAF to gain night fighting experience. In the summer of 1944 he was serving with 605 Squadron flying Mosquito VIs on intruder operations. Shortly after the V-1 offensive against London he was posted to FIU, where he joined the Tempest Flight at Newchurch.

Over the next months, a new purpose-build bay will be erected in one of the hangars, so the airframe can be assessed. On 3 July 1944, No. 3 Squadron pilot Fl/Sgt. Stanislaw Domanski (P-782357 Polish Air Force), was on patrol looking for incoming V1's when he was hit by allied anti-aircraft fire. Domanski was killed in the crash at Cliff Farm, Playden, Sussex. The Romney Marsh Wartime Collection (Incorporating Brenzett Aeronautical Museum Trust) now have some remains of the Tempest Mk. V JN752, JF-S on display. Thanks to Aircrew Remembered for the permission to use text and images!

Air Commodore John "Jack" Frost

Peter Arnold's uncle "Jack" Frost added to Tempest Pilots;

The son of a potter, John William Frost was born in Stoke-on-Trent on July 30 1921 and educated at Longton High School, which he left at 16. He joined the earthenware and bone china manufacturers Samson Bridgwood as a trainee manager, at the same time attending North Staffordshire Technical College.

In March 1941 he volunteered for the RAF as a pilot and trained in the United States. He was commissioned and retained as a basic flying instructor at Gunter Field, Montgomery, in Alabama, before returning to Britain in the spring of 1943.

MW376 is sold

Paul McSweeny reports:

"Pioneer Aero's rollercoaster ride with the Tempest MkII is about to come to an end. In the last 2 years this project has given us for various reasons hope, jubilation and despair.

The project has now been sold off shore and in the next month or so we should be packing it up and dispatching it. We are buoyed by the fact it is going to a new owner who has both the will and capability to get the aircraft back in the air."

A source says MW376 is sold to Canada.

MW763 on the move!

North Weald Airfield's page reports on Facebook:

"Catching up on a new arrival, now we have permission to post the images. Hawker Tempest II, MW763, was brought by road from Wickenby last Wednesday 14 May. It will be restored to flying condition in due course by the engineers from Weald Aviation."

Squadron Leader Dennis Usher

Dennis Charles Usher was born on January 18 1920 at Earlsfield, south-west London, and educated at Battersea Grammar School. While a shipping office clerk in the City he enlisted in the Territorial Army; but when war broke out in 1939, Usher reckoned "it would be too dangerous on the ground", and volunteered for pilot training.

Crash landed Tempest JF-E

A friend of Guy Demain sent him a picture of a crashed aircraft. He was amazed by the code: it seems to be JF-E, a well known code since the French pilot Pierre Clostermann piloted a Tempest with the same code. Could it be Clostermann's Tempest?

Air Mechanic Eddie Musselwhite passes on

"My father Albert Lacey asked my niece in New Zealand to see what contacts there were for 486 Squadron NZRAF, as his brother Eddie Musselwhite passed away on 6th March 2014 aged 92.

Eddie was British and joined as an Air Mechanic on formation of the squadron, staying with it until it was disbanded in 1946, at which time he was near Copenhagen in Denmark."

Welcome to the new Tempest page!

As you can see The Hawker Tempest Page has changed look, it's the fourth time since the website went online in December 1997! This time because the software I used was out-of-date, a lot of struggling making updates...

Now with Joomla I hope this problem will never happen again! BUT it will take a long time before everything is back to "normal". There is still a lot of work to do, many many pages are still missing. So please, be patient!
